Caffeine, Sleep and Training Recovery
Count caffeine from all sources, interpret public-health references carefully and run a more useful timing experiment.

Start with the labels, not a generic cup
Coffee-shop recipes, brew methods, serving sizes, energy products and medicines can differ substantially. Use the package, manufacturer or café nutrition value when available.
Log every source in the same 24-hour window. A total and mg/kg calculation is more transparent than a score, but still does not measure personal sensitivity.

Reference values are not guarantees
The FDA describes 400 mg/day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults. EFSA discusses 200 mg single doses and 400 mg/day for healthy adults, and 200 mg/day during pregnancy. These are public-health references, not personalised clearance to consume that amount.
Medication, pregnancy, anxiety, cardiovascular conditions and individual sensitivity can change the appropriate response.

Timing deserves its own line
Caffeine can affect sleep even when someone feels tired. Rather than pretending to know a person’s half-life, the calculator shows the final dose and elapsed time before bed.
A simple experiment is to record dose, time, bedtime, sleep onset, awakenings and next-day feeling across several comparable days. Change one variable at a time. This observes your routine without claiming to diagnose sleep.

Concentrated caffeine is different
Pure or highly concentrated caffeine can deliver a dangerous dose through a small measurement error. Do not use the calculator to plan such products. Suspected high intake or concerning symptoms require local emergency or poison-service advice.

Fictional worked example
Put the arithmetic in view
- A 68 kg adult logs 120 mg at 08:00, 80 mg at 13:00 and 160 mg at 16:00 before a 23:00 bedtime.
- Total: 360 mg. Relative amount: 360 ÷ 68 = 5.29 mg/kg. The final dose is seven hours before bed.
- The result can be compared with population references, but it does not estimate caffeine remaining in the body or declare the day safe.

FAQ
Is 400 mg a safe limit for everyone?
No. It is a population reference for most healthy adults, not a personal safety guarantee. Some people experience effects at lower amounts.
Why can caffeine affect sleep when I feel tired?
Feeling tired does not mean caffeine has stopped acting. Timing and sensitivity vary, so the tool shows context rather than a predicted clearance time.
Does body weight determine sensitivity?
It provides a useful relative-dose calculation, but genes, medications, pregnancy, regular use and health conditions also matter.
Can caffeine replace lost sleep?
No. It may temporarily change alertness but does not replace sleep or guarantee safe performance.
What if I take medication or am pregnant?
Use the pregnancy comparison only as context and discuss individual intake with an appropriate clinician or pharmacist.
